QolorFLEX® 5x8A Dimmer

City Theatrical's QolorFLEX® 5x8A Dimmers (P/N 5809) are designed to operate perfectly with City Theatrical’s QolorFLEX LED tape for professional use on Broadway, television and film, and architectural lighting installations.

The QolorFLEX 5x8A  Dimmer can control a full 40A of LED tape spread 8A each.  This allows the control of unique combinations of LED tape, such as QolorFLEX 5-in-1 LED Tape (five channels), RGBX tape (four channels), RGB tape (three channels), bi-color tape (two channels), and/or a single color tape (one channel) together in one unit. The dimmer can operate in both DMX or stand alone mode.

The QolorFLEX 5X8A Dimmer uses constant voltage technology to ensure consistent full range dimming, which is especially important at low end light levels. An easy-to-read onboard display and four-button user interface allows selection and control of six functions, including:

  1. Setting DMX addresses.
  2. Setting quantity of DMX channels.
  3. Selecting 8 or 16 bit output resolution.
  4. Setting PWM frequency (500Hz to 30KHz).
  5. Setting output dimming curve values for matching the dimming curves of other dimmers in use.
  6. Setting the device’s operating profile, and setting stand alone modes.

The unit requires a separate power supply providing input voltage of 12-24VDC. The maximum current load per channel is 8A with a maximum device output of 40A.All QolorFLEX 5X8A Dimmers are RDM capable.

pdf QolorFLEX 5x8A Dimmers for 100,000 Fairy Lights at a Winter Wedding at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Lake Tahoe, California

"I chose City Theatrical because of your reputation for quality, reliability and customer service. This installation was for a once in a lifetime event, and I didn’t want to leave anything to chance. We chose City Theatrical and QolorFLEX 5x8A Dimmers because we felt they are the Rolls Royce of our industry - the best and most reliable option available."

- John Woods, Principal Lighting and Audio Visual Specialist, Enhanced Lighting

Enhanced Lighting and Audio Visual developed a "fairy light" lighting concept for an epic wedding ceremony at The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe, California - in the middle of a snowstorm. They sought a dimming control solution that could be mounted to an overhead rig with over 100,000 hanging LED lights, and run seamlessly for over 24-hours using individual power supplies, despite extreme winter temperatures. The lighting team used 190 QolorFLEX® 5x8A Dimmers to meet their goals.

pdf QolorFLEX NuNeon, RGB and QolorFLEX 5x8A Dimmers in Das Rheingold’s Rainbow Bridge, presented at the Lobero Theatre produced by Opera Santa Barbara

Das Rheingold was the first opera to re-open to a live audience in California’s Central Coast region. Everyone involved in the production process was very excited and anxious to flex our muscles again. I was not entirely sure if all my design and production reflexes would respond, but just like riding a bicycle, we stepped right into our roles with enthusiasm. Crystal Manich, the show’s director, and I decided to stage the orchestra in view, with the singers, as a celebration of this reunion with the audience. This proved to be immensely cathartic, especially as the lighting engulfed the whole theater to form Das Rheingold’s climactic Rainbow Bridge.

QolorFLEX NuNeon was essential in the realization of this design. Since the Orchestra was staged on a series of risers, I decided to use QolorFLEX NuNeon to define and frame the negative space while bringing focus to the stage through a series of concentric portals. The lack of elaborate scenery was easily circumvented by the striking intensity, dynamic response, and color accuracy of QolorFLEX NuNeon, RGB which, with the help of a well designed LED lighting system, allowed us to create rich visual and emotional landscapes. QolorFLEX NuNeon’s ease of installation allowed us to keep our load-in to one day, with two days of prep. It was a huge advantage for this production.

pdf Light Boxes and Podium Lighting at the Democratic National Convention 2020 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin “We chose the QolorFLEX 12v RGBCW LED Tape for the light boxes because it would work with our existing 12v custom dimmer assemblies and, more importantly, we had the confidence that it would be flicker-free and look great on camera.” - Philip Rheinheimer, Set Electrics Team Lead, PRG Scenic Technologies
pdf QolorFLEX® LED Tape, RGBA, QolorFLEX 5x8A Dimmers, QolorFLEX NuNeon, WW and CW, and QolorFLEX 24x3A Dimmers at Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights at Yale University in New Haven, CT

As a production about light, the creative team sought to communicate light in different ways - as infinite and expansive, harsh when created by Doctor Faustus, and tangible and welcoming when “Marguerite Ida and Helena Annabel” finds herself in control in Act II.

Yale senior undergraduate student and lighting designer for the production Ryan Seffinger drafted wall-sized LED lightboxes to represent the more abstract design concept, in a style reminiscent of light installations by American artists James Turrell and Dan Flavin. To make these LED lightboxes come to life with amber colored light and mobility, he needed an LED tape solution that was bright, dimmable, and flexible. To create tangible-looking light, he sought a bright white LED linear lighting solution that could be folded easy into shapes.

City Theatrical’s QolorFLEX RGBA LED Tape controlled by QolorFLEX 5x8A Dimmers was selected for the lightboxes, setting the abstract space for each scene by changing orientation and color. QolorFLEX NuNeon, controlled by QolorFLEX 24x3A Dimmers to create a pulsing effect, was folded into rounded rectangles and suspended midair to create a bold, linear look.

the back wall, behind the performers on stage. We wanted a bright neon sign that could change color, and be able to tour with the show. QolorFLEX NuNeon gives us what we wanted and needed – something bright, and colorful, with the flexibility and durability to last through our upcoming tour. We can have the sign stand out, or recede, based on similar or contrasting light color of the back wall. It is super bright, and really pops when we want it to. It gives us many layers of options.

[QolorFLEX 5-in-1 LED Tape] helped us express a soft depth in our design.” - Tom Lenz, Principal/Partner, 513
pdf QolorFLEX NuNeon, Dimmers and Custom Manufacturing at Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University

“City Theatrical offered a perfect marriage of high quality LED and custom metal work needed for this installation at Brown University. The QolorFLEX NuNeon linear LED met the requirements for the running lights on the technical galleries. We needed a custom, heavy duty bracket to protect the LED, shield it from the audience, and simplify the installation. City Theatrical executed our design with a custom extrusion perfectly suited for the job.”

- Steve Rust, ASTC LC ETCP-CEE, Associate, Theatre Projects

Opening in October 2023, the Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University includes a reconfigurable Main Hall that can be transformed into an immersive experimental media cube, a 388-seat recital hall, a 275-seat end-stage theater, and more. As a small component of this new construction project, Theatre Projects' Steve Rust was looking for blue LED lighting solution to provide the technicians with easy visibility while working or having to get around two technical areas. Learn how they used 500 feet of QolorFLEX NuNeon®, Blue to provide the bright, continuous safety lighting they needed without interfering with stage lighting in this City Theatrical case study.
